Downsizing Your Space Doesn’t Mean Downsizing Your Holiday Spirit

It’s the time to get into the holiday spirit and start decorating! Often, people feel that when they downsize from a home to 55+ senior living, it also means they will have to downsize their holiday spirit. Rest assured, that is not the case! There are many ways to make your new apartment “merry and bright.”

Spending time putting up cherished items brings back holiday memories regardless of the space in which you live. These items will help you to feel connected with family, friends, and your heritage. It is these sentimental items that bring one’s apartment to life during the holiday season. Below are some tips and tricks to decorate your senior apartment.

1. LED Candles

Candles are a strong holiday symbol and are used in many celebrations and traditions. Fortunately, you can still bring the beauty of candles to your home by using LED candles without the danger of open flame in an apartment building or villa.. LED candles have come a long way; many look life-like or are scented. Light up your apartment and windows with beautiful LED candles this year to bring the holidays to life.

2. Wreaths

Wreaths are a perfect addition to your apartment regardless of the holiday or season! They can be used to decorate your apartment door or even on the wall in your apartment as an extra touch of décor. Want to add a special touch to your wreath? Create one yourself! Whether during one of our community events or with a gathering of your family and friends, creating your own wreath will add sentimental value and cherished memories.

3. Tree

If the holiday you celebrate includes the tradition of putting up a tree, do not fret! Artificial trees come in various sizes, so you will be able to find the right size for your apartment. Fill the tree with ornaments that remind you of cherished memories. Miss the real-tree smell? You can use an essential oil diffuser of spruce, fir, or pine to fill your home with the scent of a real tree. Another great idea is to add a basket of scented pine cones to your décor! Not only are they festive, but they smell great too.

4. Cozy Blankets

Cozy blankets can be found year-round and are a great way to decorate for each season. One easy way to add some holiday flavor to your apartment is by adding a festive blanket to your living room display. It can be draped over your couch, added to a blanket ladder, or even placed on a favorite recliner. As an added bonus, they are perfect for snuggling on the couch during your favorite holiday movie with a cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate.

5. Taste the Holidays

Some of the best “decorations” are delicious treats baked and displayed for those we love to enjoy. Experiencing the holidays doesn’t have to be just visual. It can be done through all five senses, including taste. Add a bowl of holiday sweets to your table décor or set a platter on display with cookies your grandchildren helped you decorate. Small touches like this will bring your space to life.

6. Music!

Although music isn’t a tangible decoration, it is a great way to add holiday flare to any space. Playing music in the background while cooking, cleaning, or having friends over adds a seasonal touch to your apartment. Playing your favorite holiday tunes will also bring back cherished memories while making new ones.

As you can see, there are many ways to bring your 55+ active adult apartment or cottage to life for the holidays without downsizing your holiday spirit. This is just a small sampling of ways to make your apartment a beautiful holiday getaway this season.
